INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY: A SPECIAL DAY TO CELEBRATE ALL DOGS AROUND THE WORLD!
Dogs are the most adorable furry creatures and it's best to have one around. We all know that dedicating just one day to man's best friend is not fair enough as they deserve to be celebrated every day and for all their lives.
They not only protect our homes but make them a little happier and warmer place to live in. These little bundles of joy are our best companions and make our moods happier and have the ability to bring a smile to our faces. They shower us with unconditional love and affection and make us forget all our worries just by wagging their tails.
Every year, International Dog day is celebrated on August 26 across the globe to encourage people to adopt more dogs instead of buying them from pet shops. The day was founded by Animal Welfare Advocate and Pet Lifestyle expert Collen Paige.
History of International Dog Day:
The history of International Dog Day dates back to 2004 when the day was founded by Collen Paige, an animal welfare advocate and pet lifestyle expert. Paige, also a conservationist, dog trainer and author, decided to celebrate International Dog Day on August 26 as it was the first time since his family adopted a dog named Sheltie when he was ten years old.
He also founded National Cat Day, National Puppy Day, National Wildlife Day, and National Mutt Day. International Dog Day has started gaining popularity across the world and is observed in many countries.
Significance of International Dog Day:
International Dog Day is observed across the globe to put the spotlight on hundreds of dogs who need to be rescued by the local authorities as they are deprived of proper care. Most of the dogs are homeless and need proper care and attention and many of them are even abused, brutally killed and poisoned. The aim of International Dog Day is to encourage people to take care of these animals as they deserve a good life.
10 ways to celebrate International Dog Day
Ready for International Dog Day? Here we go!
1. Adopt a dog from your local shelter.
By far one of the biggest things you can do in support of dogs on International Dog Day is to find a dog in need and provide them with a safe, loving, forever home. They’ll be your buddy for life, and you will have helped reduce some of the suffering experienced by millions of dogs across the world. Just be sure that you’re ready to take the big step of adopting a dog. Be sure to inform yourself of all the responsibilities, and factors to consider before adopting a dog.
2. Volunteer at your local shelter.
If you cannot adopt a dog, another great way to support canines in your community is to volunteer at a local shelter. No matter where you are around the world, there are sure to be plenty of dogs in need. You can support them by signing up as a volunteer and visiting the shelter regularly. Volunteers often walk or play with dogs, clean cages, or assist with any other task the shelter might need help with.
3. Donate to animal welfare organizations.
Don’t have time to volunteer? There are other ways to help dogs in need. For example, you could donate money to a rescue or animal welfare organization. Also, shelters are often in need of blankets, dog food and toys. Often, you can drop off these items directly at the shelter anytime; we recommend calling your local rescue or animal shelter beforehand to ask what they need.
4. Take your dog out.
If you already have a dog, then ask yourself: What does my dog love most? Visiting their friends at the dog park? Swimming in the lake? Maybe visiting a special cafe, where dogs can eat too? Whatever it is, treat your dog to their favorite activity on International Dog Day.
5. Protect your dog’s safety with a GPS tracker.
While you’re enjoying your day out, you might worry about what would happen if your dog gets scared and runs off, or worse, gets lost. With the help of a GPS dog tracker, you’ll always know where your furry friend is, and make sure that they’ll never come into harm’s way. A GPS tracker is a simple but high-tech (and affordable) solution that fits around your dog’s collar – and one that gives you peace of mind.
6. Get active with your dog.
Support your dog’s physical health and well-being by engaging in some fun, moderate physical activity together. Take a long walk, run, hike, play together, go to the dog park, or go swimming with your dog. To ensure that your furry friend gets the right amount of physical activity, you can monitor their fitness levels with a dog activity monitor.
7. Spoil your dog with a new toy.
Speaking of fun activities, what dog doesn’t love a shiny new toy to play with and unleash their energy on? If you need some ideas, check out this list of the best dog toys from Bark Post.
8. Teach your dog a new trick.
No matter how old your dog is, it’s never too late to learn something new – in fact, engaging your dog in mentally stimulating activities can help prevent dog dementia and add to a long and healthy life. Learn how to teach your old dog new tricks here!
9. Hire a professional pet photographer for a fun photo shoot.
You and your dog might already have an active social life and a close connection. So why not showcase your furry friend to the world, by having professional photos made of you and your dog? Your social media followers will thank you for the cute pics!
10. Have an International Dog Day party and invite all your friends and their dogs.
Our last tip for International Dog Day: throw a party and invite your dog (loving) friends! Your special day might include:
- dog-themed decorations
- treats for doggos and humans alike
